Mount Sinai in One of Ten Hospitals in U.S. to Attain Unprecedented Success in Cardiac Care

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 2008

Last week representatives from a select group of 10 hospitals throughout the United States met in Washington, D.C. to share findings from a three year, Robert Wood Johnson-funded project on improving cardiovascular care outcomes for African American and Latino patients. Mount Sinai Hospital (Chicago) was one of the ten hospitals participating in this collaborative effort.

A major element of "Expecting Success: Excellence in Cardiac Care" was reporting each month on 23 quality measures stated in terms of race, ethnicity, and language of patients. The ongoing measurement of indicators in the broad areas of acute myocardial infarction and heart failure kept collaborative participants focused on their goals of improving outcomes in heart failure and acute myocardial infarction among minority patients. Mount Sinai Hospital achieved many of its gains through the use of standard order sets, discharge instructions and contracts, and educational initiatives in nutrition and smoking cessation.

At project completion, there were 58 improvements out of 61 statistically significant changes in quality. Now, says national project coordinator Bruce Siegel, M.D., "The new goal is to communicate these successful approaches to hospitals throughout the United States."
