Sinai Urban Health Institute Achieves Honorable Mention for Sodexo-Modern Healthcare C.A.R.E.S. Award
Chicago, Sinai Health System - Sinai Health System is proud to announce that Sodexo and Modern Healthcare have awarded an honorable mention to Sinai Urban Health Institute for the CARES Spirit Award.
CARES, which stands for compassion, accountability, respect, enthusiasm, and service, is awarded to a team or group whose collective actions and behaviors personify those attribute.
Striving to be the national model for urban health care and to improve the health of the individuals and communities that it serves, Sinai Urban Health Institute (SUHI) shares Sinai Health System’s mission and vision. The SUHI team strongly believes that if they collect the data and do not use it to make things better they have failed.
While SUHI is mostly an academic institute made up of epidemiologists and health educators, the products of this team are not just manuscripts collecting dust on book shelves. SUHI facilitates tangible community impact. Academic centers similar to SUHI perform the research, write it up, and at best, report it to the community on a website. SUHI, however, takes the evidence, creates effective programs and informs the community regarding how the programs help. As a result, Sinai’s communities often take the reigns and sustain the programs with only a little assistance from SUHI leaders.
It is through the dedication and work of this gifted team, that SUHI has gained much ground on the path to alleviating health inequities.
(Note: Sinai Health System and SUHI will host a press conference on December 17, 2009 wherein SUHI epidemiologists Steve Whitman, Ph.D., Jennifer Orsi and Helen Margellos-Anast review findings from their most recently published work on Black-White Health Disparities in Chicago.)
