Sinai Health System Receives McCormick Foundation Grant

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 28, 2010

Chicago - Sinai Health System is pleased to announce that The McCormick Foundation has awarded it a $1 million grant to support construction of a new ambulatory care center, cornerstone of the Sinai Tomorrow project, a multiphase plan to rebuild many of Sinai’s aging buildings.

Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago was founded in 1919 by Morris Kurtzon to care for the people of the west side of Chicago, most of whom at that time were Jewish. While Sinai’s commitment to the communities and people it serves has been a constant during the last 90 years, the Sinai buildings have not been upgraded to meet the needs of 21st century medicine. Also, healthcare has shifted to more and more outpatient care. For Sinai, the new ambulatory care center will enable it to provide quality healthcare in an efficient, cost-effective, technologically sophisticated environment.

"We are honored to be able to play a part in the Sinai Tomorrow vision," said David Hiller, McCormick Foundation president and CEO. "Mount Sinai's leadership in innovative community-based healthcare provides some realistic hope that we will find sustainable ways to address our country’s healthcare dilemma."

Alan Solow, well known to the Chicago Jewish community and chairman of the Sinai Tomorrow Campaign characterizes the project in this manner "...[it] extends far beyond serving those who need community health care most. It promises a new way of life, a plan for economic sustainability and a redevelopment model for our city."
